friederike_meier@gmx.deThe subject of the master thesis was to examine the relationship between
the estuarial City Nantes (France) and the river Loire. Based on an analysis
and a self-developed master plan, a proposal for a selected place was
I stayed in Nantes for a month with the support of a scholarship for re-
search from French-German Youth Office. The results I discovered in Nan-
tes are summarized in several plans, diagrams and photo-documentations.
This geographical approach was the precondition to understand the de-
velopment of the relation between the river and the city as a base for the
following architectural conception.

The first part of the thesis is conceptualized on city-scale. After determining
the main aim „Revitalizing the relationship between the city and the
river“ and its main strategies, a catalogue of measures was created and
the Master Plan Loire was drawn. The measures are acting on physical and
psychological levels.
The Four-Phase Model provides a tool to analyze the present status and to
determine what the organizational control points and interventions are to
improve the city-river-relation.

The second part of the proposal is a design-proposal on a smaller scale.
The quay-side of the city is selected to make an example by considering
the Master Plan Loire as well as the urban situation and today‘s use of the
public space in Nantes.
The existing parking-space on the industrial quay-side is removed to create
a smaller proportioned public waterspace. The edge of the quay is pulled
down along the street-axes, the axes are extended on the water by using
swimming pontoons.
The shape of the pontoons is affected by the water-streamline. The
pontoons offer walkways and isles to stay. Location and height of
the pontoons are fixed on stilts. At low tide, the pontoons are creating a
three-dimensional foating waterscape, at high tide the scape is flat.

masks is their passion which they want to share with guests.
Instead of proposing conventional rooms, fowing, functionally defned
spatial sequences are created by the smoothly separating ramps, stairs
and atriums. Every interior space has a strong interaction with a certain
outside area. Spaces with different private and public qualities are inter-
connected by the exhibition of masks along an endless loop, made of
reinforced concrete.
