It's that quite a lot of them believe proficiency in self-defense is undermined by training for sports. Because the original purpose of the martial arts is self-defense, it should not come as a shock that there exists the belief that investing time in sportive training is self-defeating. This is just somewhat true, though. The sportive facet of training in the martial arts can certainly help enhance your self-defense abilities. This is owing to a number of reasons.    First of all, you can develop quite a few attributes that can help you transition into actual combat when you train sportively. These attributes are timing, evasive expertise, reaction speed, and explosiveness just to mention a few. All of these attributes are going to be helpful if you ever are in a situation wherein you need to look after yourself. In fact, these attributes can be a lifesaver.  Stoic or non-resistant martial arts training has a tendency to be lacking in the realistic energy needed to defend yourself effectively. It is actually much better to put your time into training wherein another person is fighting back as opposed to training in a non-resistant martial arts. Try not to take this to mean that you and your sparring partner must really hurt each other or train too hard.  For attribute development, light contact sportive fighting is really more than enough. In addition, it goes without saying that you will need to wear the proper safety gear and equipment whenever you are sparring so injuries are reduced. Toughness has the potential to help you cope with physical pain (to some degree) if you have to defend yourself in an attack.    One thing that should be stated, the sportive part of training should not be the only way you train when you're focusing on the martial arts for self-defense. Participating in some scenario-based training is also important. In this type of training, the sessions involve simulating real-world self-defense scenarios. In essence, your practice training partner will play the "bad guy". As opposed to sparring with you in an athletic way, he's going to act like an opponent. Similar to athletic sparring, scenario-based training requires that you put on appropriate gear and equipment for you and your training partner's protection.  You can look ahead to your personal protection skills to be a lot more effective when you incorporate sportive training with real life self-defense training in the martial arts.
