An Earth Friendly Solution To Pest Control
If your yard is being invaded by unwanted wild animals you may want to consider using a safe and
environmentally friendly organic repellent. There are several kinds on the market specifically designed to do
the job without harming your children or family pets. You may find those available that target a specific
animal or that have natural ingredients that will keep several different types of pests away.
Basically, a repellent is used to keep animals away from certain objects, areas, plants or other animals. Like
other similar products, an will naturally cause an animal to stay away because of its aversion to a smell or
taste. The animal gets irritated and learns to avoid the area or other object. You may prefer using an
effective natural lawn or garden treatment instead of having to kill or trap the animal. Many times these are
only short term solutions because other animals may take over the territory.
The animals invading your yard can do significant damage to your property and potentially harm family pets.
Many are learning to adapt to living in more urban areas and to being around people. Given the
proper kinds of shelters or living environment, many wild animals can make a home in your area. Your
neighbors may mean well by leaving out scraps of food for wild animals but it may be creating a problem for
you. If they feed their family pets and leave the food outside it will also attract small animals. Squirrel
populations can get out of control if there?s a steady food source available all year long and no predators
around. Gophers do not care about the fence separating your yard from your neighbors. If the animals get
crowded out of the other yard they will start digging tunnels onto your property, and no one likes an
encounter with a skunk, which can hurt your family dog and cost you an expensive visit to the veterinarian.
The best time to start using repellent or any other kind of treatment is when you first notice signs that you
have a problem. You will not want to give any wild animals the chance to get a home established. Make sure
your garbage cans and other outside containers have lids that lock down securely and cannot easily be
opened. Try to make a habit out of waiting until a few hours before the trash truck arrives to put out the
garbage during daylight to keep animals from getting into it. You may want to also make sure to animal-
proof the perimeter of your home. Fill in any holes around the foundation and cover any window wells with
grates or chick wire available at most home improvement stores. If you have an ongoing problem you may
want to routinely check the outside of your home to spot any problem areas.
Generally, small wild animals have their young in the spring when the weather turns warm. Animals are also
most active in the summer so if they start you move into your yard or garden you should be able to see the
signs before they do much damage. If you find an abandoned animal you should not touch it but call your
local animal control. Taking care of unwanted pests in your yard can be a challenge. But by using a good
quality you can get rid of them humanely while also protecting the health of your children and your pets.
