My Scrapbook of the Human Body by Professor Genius
QA Kids
As you open this scrapbook… If you are like me, you will no doubt be fascinated by the many mysteries of the human body that are described in this book.
We are amazing machines, made of billions of cells, all organized and programmed to carry out a thousand and one different tasks. Thanks to the remarkable teamwork of these cells, we can move, breathe, grow, and think!
From the very beginning, human beings have tried to understand how the body works, not only out of curiosity, but to heal pain and to cure illnesses. For thousands of years, religion, magic, and superstition tried to provide the answers, but it was only when people started dissecting cadavers around 500 years ago that the secrets of the human body began to be revealed. As the different internal organs were discovered, we learned what they were for. Thanks to the progress made in the last 200 years, doctors, scientists and health care workers now have a much better knowledge of how the body works. In spite of the great progress we’ve made, however, we are still a long way from knowing everything there is to know; there are countless other mysteries to unravel, medicines to be developed, and illnesses to cure…
I must confess that the subject of the human body has always held a particular fascination for me. Over the years, I have collected many magazine articles, newspaper clippings, books, and photographs on the subject. My wish is to share all this knowledge with you now, and to pass on some of my enthusiasm, too! And so, dear reader, here is “My Scrapbook of the Human Body.” Unfortunately, I could never convey all there is to know in so few pages, because the subject is an endless one! I only hope that this scrapbook will fire up your imagination and encourage you to continue your quest for knowledge.
Have fun reading this book, never forget to keep asking questions, and let your mind be filled with wonder!

Dear Professor Genius,
I really enjoyed leafing through your documents, drawings, e-mails, and all your findings. I dissected them, felt them, and examined them as if they belonged to my own area of specialty: medicine. You have understood, Professor Genius, how the body is an amazing piece of machinery, ready to function, most often for the better, but sometimes with difficulties and restraints.
We do not know everything there is to know about the human body, but we know enough to appreciate its complexity and its worth: the bones, muscles, spleen, its abilities and emotions… all that is inside us! Thank you, Professor Genius, for reminding us, and for having such an excellent approach to the subject. Our health is, indeed, our most precious asset.
I wish you well on your scrapbook and I praise your scientific pursuits, your sense of humanity, and your imagination.
You should now take care of yourself, for you have worked very hard. I wouldn’t want you to get sick from overwork. I heard you cough the other day!
I’m keeping an eye on you.
Your doctor,
Jean-François Chicoine Pediatrician
My friend Dr. Chicoine is a pediatrician and a well-known science lecturer. He is the co-founder, along with Rémi Baril, of “Le Monde est ailleurs,” meaning “The World is somewhere else,” an organization that works for the health and rights of children around the world.

The characters in Professor Genius’ universe, except for Dr. Jean-François Chicoine and those mentioned in the Acknowledgments, are pure fantasy. Any resemblance to actual living persons is entirely coincidental. Although the facts they contain are accurate, the newspaper articles, old letters, books and magazines drawn from the professor’s personal collection are all products of the imagination of the creators of this scrapbook.
