Every Man His Own University

An alumnus of Yale University and founder and first president of Temple University in Philadelphia, Russel Conwell spent most of his life as an educator. He was a big advocate of self-study and learning by experience.
“Books are not the original sources of power,” he writes, “but observation, which may bring to us all side experience, deep thinking, fine feeling and the power to act for oneself, is the very dynamo of power.”
The strength of his character was honed both in the classrooms of Yale, and fighting in the Civil War for the Union Army in the 27th Massachusetts Volunteers. During his time of service, he became known for his self-sacrifice and duty to his fellow soldiers.
