LAAX, GRAUBÜNDEN, SWITZERLAND
Scenic Switzerland never fails to impress with its rolling hills
and quiet towns. Laax has a population that stands at less
than 1,300 people, and it also has the picture-perfect lush
meadows and powder-snow mountain peaks. These tranquil
surroundings are also the ideal playground for winter sports
such as snowboarding and skiing. Recent projects include

This is a watershed year for Cartier. The
French watch marque is developing its own
movements, ref ecting the brand’s commitment to
manufacturing mechanisms in-house. Last year’s
Ballon Bleu de Cartier Flying Tourbillon timepiece
was its f rst foray into the world of calibres. This
year, Cartier showed more than 10 timepieces
with various case shapes and inventive graphic
designs. Our pick: The Tank Américaine flying
tourbillon watch in pink gold, 9452 MC calibre. It
has an octagonal crown in 18-karat gold set with
a faceted sapphire, a sapphire crystal caseback
and brown alligator-skin strap. There’s even

PIAGET POLO FORTY FIVE
When it was f rst unveiled 30 years ago, the Piaget
Polo was acclaimed for the perfect integration of its
case, bezel, and strap or bracelet. Three decades on,
the Polo Forty Five looks set to win over new fans.
Dressed in both titanium and rubber, it now comes
in a larger 45mm case, with a bracelet secured
by a folding clasp. The 880p flyback chronograph
movement with dual time zone are visible thanks
to the sapphire crystal caseback.
IWC AQUATIMER CHRONOGRAPH
GALAPAGOS ISLAND EDITION
The Aquatimers have always been known for
roubustness and technical superiority since the
line was launched in 1967. This year, IWC took
it a step further and unveiled f ve new models
under this family. The standout is the Galapagos
Island edition, a new collaboration between
IWC and the Charles Darwin Foundation. (2009
marks the bicentenary of Darwin who made
his observations on the origins of species on
the Galapagos.) It has a matte black stainless-
steel case and a strap coated with vulcanised
rubber. The black dial contrasts strongly with
the white indications, making the handsome
watch, which is pressure resistant to 12bar, a
conspicuous statement on the wrist.
