JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE
EUROPEAN COMMISSION
PRESENTATION
Within the frame of its activities on Food Contact Materials for Commission services, the Joint Research
sCentre of the European Commission organized the 1 ' International Forum for Researchers Mobility
(FYRM), the 12th of February 2002 in Varese (Italy).
Background
th
From the second research programme ("Structuring the European Research Area") proposed in the 6
Framework Programme of the European Commission it emerges that there is a structural weakness of
European Research as a direct link between young researchers and that the high quality research
possibilities in Europe are largely unknown.
There is thus an urgent need to maintain and increase Europe's competitiveness by increasing the
number of researchers, strengthening and harmonising their formation, and promoting their mobility.
Scope
h
The proposed goal of this forum was to pro-actively answer the priorities expressed in the 6' Framework
programme promoting the European Research Area and in particular regarding the strengthening of
European Research through improved inter-sectoral and trans-national mobility of researchers, with a
focus on the field of food packaging.
To this aim, our specific objectives were to create links between researchers, industries and both private
and public institutions, and highlighting the various possibilities of research throughout Europe.
This was done through:
• Information exchange between the needs of the industry, the expectations of the researchers
and potentials of both public and private research institutes;
• The possibility for the researchers to present themselves, their background and skills to industry
and research centres of all EU Member States;
• The possibility for industries and research centres to present their activities, their goals, skills
sought in candidate, working style and potential career possibilities;
• The establishment of contacts between researchers of different origin both professional and
geographical as well as companies to promote possible co-operations, mutual opening and
access to results and joint research projects;
• The creation of a web page with information about the forum and containing a database of
researchers curriculum vitae, accessible to all industries and research centres looking for qualified
personnel as well as to one directed towards organisations to make public their potential to
researchers. Programme:
The programme consisted of a defined number of invited lectures of key representatives in the field of
food packaging, as well as poster sessions in which organisations could present themselves to the
audience. The forum also foresaw the implementation of databases of both organisations and
researchers (which was also presented during the event).
The following areas were covered within the invited lectures:
ERA and mobility
Performance of food contact materials and research horizon
Chemical and safety aspects
New and emerging packaging
The industry role and needs
The enforcement role and needs
The contract laboratories role and needs
Mapping of the European Options
The personal aspects of mobility
Benefits:
The forum aimed to provide benefits of mobility as an instrument enriching greatly the value of
research performed and creating European added value, in particular by:
• Raising the scientific excellence of individual researchers and furthering the creation of
internationally renowned centres of excellence attractive to researchers from all over the world;
• Fostering research collaboration internationally, with different regions (including the less-
favoured of the EU and the candidate countries) and between the academic and business worlds
(networking)
• Enhancing the transfer of knowledge and technology between the different actors of the
European research and innovation system, including industry
• Making theh work more efficient by optimising the use of research funding opportunities
and research infrastructure as well as pooling together competence and experience, providing
better dissemination of research results.
• Mapping of Europeanh excellence in a time effective manner
o Facilitation of rapid and easy contact of the most suitable centres or potential personnel for
any specific task in food packaging research.
o Rapid identification and integration of researchers specialised in the specific needs of the
Food Packaging Industries, Research Institutes and Universities
Highly valuable output: Co-operations, mutual opening and access to results and joint research
projects and funding as well as enhancing the research possibilities of Industry, Research Centres
and Universities.
Participants:
The Forum was directed to:
• All researchers, regardless of their current geographical location and sectoral specialisation, that
want to take advantage of geographical and intersectoral mobility as an effective way of acquiring
and capitalising knowledge.
• All Industries, Research Centres and Universities who want to take advantage of mobility of
researchers as base of increased diversity, creativity, experience input and exchange and long-
term return value. FYRM

FORUM OUTPUT AND ACHIEVEMENT
The Forum itself aimed primarily to represent a valuable starting point to promote mobility, but
needs a long term action to establish permanently a focal point for the exchange of staff
between academia, industry and research centres and have these grow to the levels that the
Commission intends to achieve. For this purpose an Internet site, will be created at
http://fyrm.jrc.it/. This site will contain two databases. One database will be available to
researchers to insert their CVs in a standard format, whereas the other one will be directed to
institutions to provide a rapid presentation of the company and opportunities offered. The data
will be used to crate a directory of EU research possibilities on food packaging which will
provide the necessary information to scientists willing to establish contacts. A link will also be
inserted as a direct link into an already well recognised web site in the field of food contact
materials: http://cpf.jrc.it/webpack.
CURRICULUM VITAE DATABASE
Researchers can insert their CV and it will be available for all companies and institutions that will
need qualified personnel, experience exchange, etc. Thus researchers are invited to insert
personally their CV.
Due to the privacy policy the insertion of data is allowed only to the individual researcher. The
login and password given when registering are mandatory to re-access data in the future. They
are strictly personal and secret.
CV insertion
If you wish to put your CV in this database then you must register. Once registered click on
"Data Base LOGIN" and then on "ADD CV" in the menu on the left to add your CV. You are only
allowed to submit 1 CV (your own) and you cannot see any other CVs except the one you have
submitted.
Once you have registered a confirmation will be e-mailed to you.
Please keep your login and password safe and secret. Once you have submitted a CV you may
update it in the future only using your login and password.
Finding a CV
Industries, Universities and Research Centres who want to see all the CVs submitted to this
database must request a login from Mika Helminen (mika.helminen@jrc.it).
