institutionsaroundtheworldarestrugglingtoconservetheirsoundandimagecollectionsin
bothanalogueanddigitalformats.Moreover,conservationofsoundandimagematerialsis
complexandrequiresspecializedguidance,skillsandinfrastructure.Whiledigitizationoffersnewpossibilitiesforwideraccessandpreservation,manyinstitutionslackexpertisetoassessthetechnologicalimplicationsandtomakeinformedchoicesthatdonotstraininstitutionalresourcesandatthesametimerespecttheauthenticityandinherentvaluesofthisheritage.Thecoursewillprovideanoverviewofissuesrelatedtothepreservationandaccessofsoundandimagematerialse.g.,photographs,films,videoandaudiotapes,anddigitalmaterials.Itwilldiscussthevalue,meaning,selectionanduseofsoundandimage
collectionsinvariousinstitutionalcontexts,exploringthepotentialofsoundandimage
mediaintransmittingknowledgeandculturaltraditions.Initialsessionswillespeciallyfocus
onidentificationofvariousformatsincludingtheplaybackequipment,lifeexpectancyof
mediaandwaysofdetectingdeterioration.Additionalcoursetopicswillinclude:current
knowledgeandpracticesfordocumentingandcataloguing,mediahandlingandstorage,risk
assessmentofcollections,emergencypreparednessandresponse,criteriaandtechnologies
formigrationandreformatting,planningpreservationprojects,outsourcingoptions,digital
preservationandmanagement.Otherissuessuchascuratingandaccess,copyrightlaws,legaldeposit,andinstitutionalandnationalpreservationpolicieswillbediscussedincontextwithparticipants´workingrealities.Adaptationtotechnologicalchangesandrelatedcost‐ effectivepreservationstrategieswillformakeycomponentofthecourse.OBJECTIVESAttheendofthecourse,participantswillbeable:torecognizematerialsandmediaintheirsoundandimagecollections,toidentifyrisksandmakeinformedchoicesforpreservationandaccess.Theywillhaveimprovedtheirskillstocommunicateeffectivelyacrossdisciplinesandtoworkinteams.COURSEMETHODOLOGY:Thecoursewillcompriselectures,avarietyofgroupactivities,practicalsessions,casestudiesandsitevisits.Significanttimewillbeallocatedforindependentconsultationwiththecourseteam.Casestudiesforthecoursewillbebasedonparticipants´inputsandwilladdressissuesandchallengesidentifiedbythem.Thus,activeinvolvementofparticipantswillbesoughtduringthecoursepreparationphase.Afollow‐upprogramme,willinvolveworkingonself‐definedinitiativesinparticipants´homeinstitutionsandcommunicatingaswellasnetworkingthroughaplatformsupportedbytheorganizers.PARTICIPANTS:Thecourseisaimedatprofessionalsworkingwithmixedcollectionsthathavesoundandimagerecordsofnationalorregionalsignificance.Inparticular,itwillinterestarchivists,
collectionmanagers,conservators,curatorsandlibrariansinchargeofpreservingsuch
collectionsinvariousculturalinstitutionsaroundtheworld.ItwillalsointerestInformation
