Abstract: Butane skeletal isomerization reaction on sulfated zirconia at low temperature was studied to investigate the general features of the active structure and the reaction mechanism. Labile sulfate species, which can be removed by water washing and restored by gaseous SO 3sulfation, were discovered to be the key components in active sulfated zirconia for butane skeletal isomerization. The initial step of n-butane isomerization on sulfated zirconia was concluded to be the in situ generation of butene by oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane. Isomerization takes place as monomolecular skeletal isomerization of the n-butyl carbenium ion to the iso-butyl carbenium ion.
