We show that non-abelian discrete symmetries which act non-trivially in generation spacecan serve as profound explanation. We present three low energy models with the permutation0symmetry S , the dihedral group D and the double-valued group T as flavor symmetry.

Abstract
In this thesis we discuss possibilities to solve the family replication problem and to understand the
observed strong hierarchy among the fermion masses and the diverse mixing pattern of quarks and
leptons. We show that non-abelian discrete symmetries which act non-trivially in generation space
can serve as profound explanation. We present three low energy models with the permutation
0symmetry S , the dihedral group D and the double-valued group T as flavor symmetry. The4 5
0T model turns out to be very predictive, since it explains tri-bimaximal mixing in the leptonq
mdsector and, moreover, leads to two non-trivial relations in the quark sector, = |V | andusmsq
m V 0d td= . The main message of the T model is the observation that the diverse pattern in
