by Johannes WILBERT.
The following vocabulary belongs to a language of the Sanemd linguistic
family, as spoken on the upper Caura River in Venezuela. It was collected
by the author in i960 with the assistance of a young and impatient info
rmant whose command of the Spanish language was very deficient. Due to
these disadvantageous circumstances the vocabulary is likely to contain a
number of mistakes.
To the anthropologist, the Sanemâ are better known by the names of
Guaharibo and Shirishana. This usage is discontinued here. Not only are
these terms completely meaningles to the Indians themselves, they also are
deprived of any classificatory value. The name Guaharibo, very much like
" savage", Maru or Tapuya, is a vague and collective designation, meaning
" howler-monkey". while Shirishana has a derogatory connotation meaning
Sanemá, instead, means " people ". It is the term which the Indians
themselves use to designate the members of their sub-tribe and which
merits, therefore, our choice of preference.
