This volume collects together the contributions, the experiences,
and the ideas which have been presented in an experts' meeting on the
theme of the protection of citrus groves.
The occasion of the meeting permitted researchers in various disci
plines, and from various Countries, to tackle just one subject of
research, the citrus fruit, in the context of a single specific topic,
the defence of the crop in the light of the most recent knowledge gained.
The meeting was divided into working sessions which considered ba
sic research on damaging insects, mites, nematodes, weeds, fungal, bac
terial and viral diseases, as well as the application of control techni
ques, subdivided into biological, biotechnical, chemical, cultural and
genetic, all of which were proposed from an ecological point of view
regarding the citrus agro-ecosystem.
Particular attention was paid to methods and strategies of integrat
ed control, taking into account also the influence of some phytochemi-
cals on the physiology of the citrus crop; in addition economic conside
rations were discussed.
The works presented are all reported "in extenso" and show an up-
to-date picture of both the causes of damage and the most efficient me
thods of control.
About one hundred experts participated from nine Countries and
three international organizations, with a total of eighty scientific
contributions.
The meeting was organised by the Commission of the European Commu
nities and was particularly wide-ranging both in the expertise of the
participants and in their different places of origin.
The meeting was held at a highly suitable place, the Citrus Experi
mental Institute of Acireale, which can justly be considered a meeting
point for experts in this field.
This work intends to make widely available the most recent knowledge
on new phytosanitary techniques and on the situations in the different
Countries, with regard to control measures. It certainly constitutes a
point of reference for all the knowledge acquired in this specific
sector of the defence of citrus groves against their noxious agents.
