Friction is a complexmultiscale phenomenon that depends both on the atomic interactions inside the contacts,onthemacroscopicelasticandplasticbehaviorofthesolidsincontact, andontheunavoid-able, stochastic roughness characterizing real surfaces. Tribology, the science of friction,has developed much in recent years, but many questions are still open.
