The breach of transla-tional invariance in bounded media is an additional complication. Theproblem is described quantum-statistically by nonequilibrium Green’sfunctions. Essential advantages for the further analysis arise from thefact that the contribution of incident light splits off from the photonfield propagators. This property provides insight into the interplay ofthe excitations of light and matter as well as into the mechanisms ofemission. A radiation law valid for bounded media in nonequilibriumsteady states is derived and discussed in the context of optical proper-ties of excited semiconductors.
