How to Eat Healthy During Winter
Winter is a time where your metabolism slows down, your immune system is put
to the test and you tend to feel the effects of being tired, unmotivated and
lethargic. Many are also driven to comfort foods which can cause weight gain
and healthy eating can be put on hold.
Here are 5 effective ways to increase energy in winter so you can strengthen your
immune system, stop the cold and flu symptoms from appearing and continue
with healthy eating:
Exercise: Because its cold outside this usually is the first thing that people stop
doing, but its the number 1 thing you should increase. Exercise will quicken your
metabolism, reduces the amount of fat being added to your waistline and
increase your energy levels.
Refined Carbohydrates: These are your white pastas, breads, biscuits and
cereals. They have been so highly refined that they contain no nutritional benefit,
are toxic for the body, and are the main cause of weight gain. Opt for the
alternative such as: gluten free, wholegrain or sprouted grain.
Greens & Vegetables: Eating more of these will dramatically increase your
energy levels as they are full of nutrients which the body needs for energy
production and they provide your immune system with everything it needs to stay
strong.
Energy Drinks: Drinking caffeinated drinks only utilise the energy you have in

your body already which is why you feel tired afterwards and why you feel the
need to keep on drinking them – they are energy draining drinks. The only real
energy drink is green smoothies, vegetable or fruit juices as they give you
nutrients to create energy.
Meat products: Meat takes quite a while to breakdown once consumed and
eating a large meat dish before bed will cause you to feel tired and lethargic the
next morning. Try a few meat free nights a week or reduce your meat
consumption by half and add extra greens to your meal.
By applying these 5 tips one at a time or all at once, healthy eating during winter
can be made easy.

1 Day Winter Meal Plan Example:
Breakfast: Porridge with rice or almond milk and a piece of diced fruit or
blueberries.

avocado 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger 2 cups of spinach 2 cups of filtered
water (blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth)
