Start Potty Training Phase 1Introduction This will be where we introduce your child to the toilet training idea. This phase will only last for 2 days. You will only be working with your child 2 sessions a dayonce in the morning, and then again in the afternoon, with each session lasting 2 hours. So, 2 days, with 2 sessions each day for 2 hours each. During these sessions, you’re going to let your toddler go about their usual routine. However, every 15-20 minutes, or when you see your child giving indications that they may need to use the restroom, you’re going to put them on thetraining potty or toilet. At the end of each session you will revert back to a diaper, and simply go on with your day. Sessions should never last more than two hours at most, and you want to make this interesting and fun for them. Stick with this routine for at least two days, and no more than three days. Remember, we are not actually trying to train them at this point. We are simply getting them used to the idea of sitting on a toilet or potty. We want them to see that there is nothing to be afraid of and nothing complicated. Keep this fun for your child. Phase 2 - Training This is where the real training begins. Only after you have gotten them familiar with the potty, and what it is meant to be used for, will we move to this all-day session. This all-day session means exactly what it sounds like.
You will be working with your child throughout the day. This may seem like a huge commitment, but trust me, it will make your overall experience shorter and much more enjoyable. You will want to make sure that you can stick with this routine all day long. This is very important for your success. This means that you will need to plan ahead. It will be best to be home all day with your toddler, or at least to make sure that you are bringing the child’s potty with you everywhere that you go during the day. Assuming you are able to keep your child home all day, it is best to allow them to run around naked or at the very most to be in a shirt. Because they are not wearing a diaper, they will not have a container, so to speak, to hold their pee or poop. As a result, they will want to put it somewhere. This is where the training potty / toilet comes in. Because they already know what it is at this point, a child will often make the decision on their own to head towards the potty. They may need a little reassurance from you, so be ready with a smile and reassuring words. When your child does pee or poop in the toilet, make sure that you and the child check out the accomplishment visually together. This is a proud moment for them. If possible, allow the child to do the flushing themselves, so that they can watch their pee or poo disappear. This creates a sense of accomplishment. You will want to congratulate them in a way that lets them know that they’ve done something absolutely amazing and wonderful! If possible, it’s a great idea to give them a physical reward every time they go to the potty. As you know your child best, you will know what excites or motivates them most. This could be stickers, candy, or some other treat that makes them happy. It’s very important at this stage for your child to understand that using the toilet is a lot better choice than using their diaper, becauseit’s fun and interesting. Potty Training Tip: It’svery important to understand during this time, that your child may feel upset if they have an accident after learning how to use the toilet. If this happens, simply reassureyour child that it’s okay, because
accidents do happen sometimes. Keep everything positive, and this will allow your child to learn faster with a healthy outlook. If it’s convenient to potty train your child during the summer,or during a break from school, that’s great. However, it doesn’t always workout that way. If your child is in school, or spending time with a babysitter, or any other adult, get them involved in the process. Let them know that you are in the middle of potty training your child at home. Teachers and other caregivers can be a huge help or a huge hindrance to your efforts to potty train your child. Keep in mind that if your child is being rewarded at home for using the toilet, then they will also expect to be rewarded at school for the same activity, at least at the beginning. After all, this is a new and wonderful accomplishment that they should be proud of and that is worthy of a reward! Make sure that you bring whatever candy, stickers, or reward you are using for your toddler to leave with the caregiver or teacher. It’s important for them to understand that your child needs to be celebrated for using the potty, and immediately rewarded with whatever candy, stickers, etc. that you’re leaving with them.Potty Training Tip: Keep in mind is that it can be very helpful for a male to potty train a boy, and just as helpful for a female to potty train a girl. It is often easier for a little boy to learn from a father, grandfather, or other male role model how to use the restroom correctly than it is for a female to do this. So, if possible get a male role model involved in this process. For a little girl, get mom, grandmother, or another key female role figure to help with this process, if possible. It’sjust going to be a little easier for a girl to learn from a female exactly how to use the potty. So, if you have this option, take advantage of it. Another thing to keep in mind is that you will want to restrict drinking later in the day to some degree. It is really best if you can avoid giving them anything to drink for at least an hour before they are going to go to bed. This will give your child an advantage in trying to stay dry all night. It’s okay to let them sleep in a diaper at this point, but let them know that if they can stay dry several nights in a row that they will get to sleep in their big boy or big girl pajamas.
These new sleep clothes should be something that they look forward to, as a reward. If they love puppies, then their new sleep clothes may have different images of puppies on them. If your child loves a particular color or particular cartoon character, it would be a great idea to remember this when picking out their new big boy or big girl sleep clothes. It gives them great motivation, and something to look forward to! Getting their new sleep clothes should be a celebration event for your child. However, as with potty training during the day, it’s important to keep in mind that your boy or girl may still have an accident once they have been promoted to the big boy or big girl sleep clothes. This could be a traumatizing experience for them. Again, you need to reassure them that accidents do happen sometimes. 3 Day Potty Training I hope this has been helpful.
