StrategicPlan20112016IntroductionTheRobertStempelCollegeofPublicHealth&SocialWork(RSCPHSW)2011StrategicPlanupdatesthe20032007StrategicPlanwhichlaidapathtoaccreditation.The20032007Planwasincrementallyrevised.ThenewplanmobilizestheCollegetoadvanceitsvision:“Toadvanceandintegratehealthandsocialwelfare,weseekexcellenceineducation,research,andcommunityservicefordiversecommunitiesanddynamicpopulations.”TheMPHprogramatFIUwasfirstaccreditedin1993bytheCouncilonEducationforPublicHealth;doctoralprogramswerestartedin2003tomeettherequirementsforanewschool;theRSCPHSWreceiveditsfirstaccreditationasaschoolinJune2007.TheCollegenowenrollsalmost1500students,employs70fulltimefaculty,andawardsalmost400degreesannually.Hispanic,Black,Asian,andinternationalstudentsrepresentalmost70%ofenrollmentintheRSCPHSW.Wetakeprideintheimpactourgraduatesmakeuponthenationandtheworld.TheRSCPHSW,theCollegeofNursingandHealthSciences,andtheHerbertWertheimCollegeofMedicineformthecoreofanacademichealthcenterthatwillfacilitateinterdisciplinaryapproachestosolvinghealthcareproblemsintheregionandthenation.Addedto“health”askeycollaborativecontentareasintheFIU20102015StrategicPlanarethearts,environmentandglobalizationtosolidifyFIU’spositionasWorldsAhead.Consequently,theRobertStempelCollegeofPublicHealthandSocialWorkisstrategicallyplacedinFIU’splanstoservethecommunitybyeducatinghealthprofessionalsandconductingappliedresearchinhealthfields.FloridaInternationalUniversityisanurban,multicampus,publicresearchuniversityofferingabroadarrayofundergraduate,graduate,andprofessionalprograms.Theuniversityhastwomaincampuses,the344acreModestoA.MaidiquecampusinwesternMiamiDadeCounty,andthe200acreBiscayneBayCampusinnortheastMiamiDadeCounty.Throughelevencollegesandschools,FIUoffers181baccalaureate,Master's,professional,anddoctoraldegreeprogramsandconductsbasicandappliedresearch.Interdisciplinarycentersandinstitutesconductcollaborativeresearchtoseekinnovativesolutionstoeconomic,technological,healthandsocialproblems.Withnearly46,000students,over850fulltimeinstructionalfaculty,andover8,000degreesawardedannually,FIUisthelargestuniversityinSouthFlorida.TheCarnegieFoundationfortheAdvancementofTeachingclassifiesFIUasaResearchUniversity/HighResearchActivity.Theannualresearchexpendituresexceed$100million.Committedtobothhighqualityandaccess,FIUmeetstheeducationalneedsoffulltimeandparttimeundergraduateandgraduatestudents,andlifelonglearners.ReflectingthevibrantethnicdiversityofSouthFlorida,85%ofFIUstudentsareHispanic,Black,orotherminorities.FIUholdsthedesignationofHispanicServingInstitution.Reflectingtheglobalizationtheme,andaddressingthediversityofourcommunity,FIUmaintainsadiversefacultyandstaffaswell.Itisinthiscontextthatweproposeastrategicplantofacilitatetheimplementationofthevision,mission,andgoalsoverthenextfiveyears.
