Red alert for Coral
Located off the coast of Queensland in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral bed in the world. Due to the rich variety of marine life it supports, it has been a UNESCO heritage site since 11. June 11 will mark the 250th anniver-sary of its discovery by British explorer, Captain James Cook.
Now, the coral is under threat. In the last five years it has suffered three major episodes of ‘bleaching’ caused by global warming. If nothing is done, it risks extinction in the coming decades. In order to reverse this phenomenon theReef Restoration and AdaptationProgram proposed a range of 43 promising new concepts to the Australian Government, who have pledged to spend an initial 150 million dollars on continuedresearch aimed at building up the reef’s ability to become more resilient.
At a time when the conservative government in Australia is accused of inaction over climate change, in favour of supporting the mining sec-tor, will this be enough to preserve over 400 types of coral, 1500 species of fish, and 5,000 different molluscs, many of which are listed as at risk of extinction by UNESCO?
